This Week in The Trucking Industry: Industry Leadership, AI Solutions, and Market Trends

CVSN Announces New Board of Directors for 2024-2025

The Commercial Vehicle Solutions Network (CVSN) introduced its new board for the 2024-2025 term, bringing together seasoned professionals to lead the organization. Ian Johnston, Vice President of Operations & Marketing at Harman HVS Ltd., was elected as president. Supporting him are Mike Harris, Vice President of Parts & Service at FleetPride, and Corey Miller, CEO of Parts for Trucks, serving as vice president and treasurer, respectively.

The board features a mix of industry veterans, including representatives from major suppliers and distributors such as VIPAR HD, UAP Inc., HDA Truck Pride, and Dayton Parts. According to Johnston, the newly appointed leaders aim to drive growth and tackle the challenges facing the commercial vehicle aftermarket.

Volvo Trucks Unveils AI-Powered Maintenance Solution

At the American Trucking Associations’ Management Conference & Exhibition, Volvo Trucks North America launched AI-enhanced maintenance services under its Blue Service Contract. The adaptive system optimizes service intervals based on real-time data, such as fuel consumption and idle time. By doing so, it aims to reduce over-maintenance, streamline repairs, and maximize vehicle uptime.

Magnus Gustafson, Vice President of Connected Services at Volvo Trucks North America, highlighted the benefits of AI in preventing costly over-servicing and ensuring service centers are prepared when trucks arrive for maintenance. The new offerings include customizable services like fuel filter replacements, DOT inspections, and even truck washes.

Trailer Market Faces a Continued Downturn

The trailer industry is still grappling with a market trough, as noted by FTR CEO Jonathan Starks at the National Trailer Dealers Association (NTDA) convention. He acknowledged that while production levels have decreased and are likely to remain subdued for another three quarters, a recovery could begin in the latter half of 2025.

The decline follows a surge in 2021 and 2022, which was driven by strong freight demand. With trailer production expected to dip to 228,000 units in 2024, Starks believes that industry adjustments to inventory levels will eventually stabilize the market. Data indicates a significant drop in orders, with dry van orders down 31% year-to-date, though reefer orders have seen a 24% increase.

American Truck Dealers Report a 6.3% Decline in New Truck Sales

New commercial truck sales have seen a 6.3% decrease through the first three quarters of 2024, with heavy-duty trucks bearing the brunt of the decline at 12.5%. However, medium-duty truck sales have increased slightly. According to the American Truck Dealers (ATD), the opening of order books for the 2025 model year boosted Class 8 truck orders in September, suggesting some optimism for the year ahead.

Used truck prices have also fallen since their peak during the microchip shortage. ATD Chief Economist Patrick Manzi anticipates further rate cuts from the Federal Reserve by the end of the year, which could lower interest rates and positively impact the trucking industry’s sales outlook for 2025.

ATRI Highlights Economic Concerns in the Trucking Industry

For the second consecutive year, economic factors top the list of concerns for the transportation industry, as reported by the American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI). Rising operational costs, a weak freight market, and political uncertainty are key challenges. Despite the economic pressure, some companies remain optimistic, viewing the current situation as a typical business cycle.

Fleet leadership has highlighted rising equipment costs, labor costs, and difficulties in hiring quality drivers as primary concerns. The overall marginal cost of operating a truck reached a record $2.27 per mile in 2023, reflecting a significant rise since 2020.

Industry Employment Announcements

Several key appointments were made this week, including Ashok Vedanayagam’s role as head of marketing for Continental Tire in the Americas. Additionally, former American Trucking Associations President Thomas J. Donohue passed away at age 86. Other notable appointments include BRW’s Derek Walcott and Tim Comstock in executive roles, and Shur-Co’s Thomas Bronz taking over as president of Agriculture, Construction & Waste.

This week’s updates reflect a blend of strategic leadership changes, advancements in technology, and market shifts, underscoring the dynamic nature of the trucking industry. As the sector navigates economic challenges, innovations like AI-driven maintenance and strategic planning at the board level are setting the stage for future growth and resilience.
